Taylor Swift has released 'Mean,' the third single from her 2010 album, 'Speak Now.'
In the song, Swift, who comfortably resides in both the pop and country world, returns to Nashville, showcasing her charming southern drawl and the small town narratives that have made her one of the most successful artists in popular music.
Borrowing straightforward arrangements used by other similar country artists like the Dixie Chicks, 'Mean' opens with the banjo, mandolin and simple hand claps. When the chorus hits, Swift sings, "Someday I'll be living in big old city / And all you'll ever gonna be is mean / Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me / And all you'll ever gonna be is mean."
Eventually, widening the instrumentation with harmonies, fiddle, drums and acoustic guitar, the track still feels completely organic right up until the three-part harmony leading into the outro.
'Mean' is the third and most country-centered single from, 'Speak Now,' an album which sold over 1 million copies in its first week, and spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200. All 14 tracks from the album appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with its previous two singles, 'Mine' and 'Back to December,' peaking at No. 7 and No. 6, respectively.
